We started our YouTube channel in 2018, one year after launching the blog, as a result of deciding to leave the rat race to embrace a purposeful, fun and free lifestyle.

Our first video, marks the moment we realised that life is too short not to be lived to its fullest.

From there, after three months on the portuguese Madeira Island, we took off to Southest Asia, where we traveled through Malaysia, Thailand and Bali.

As you navigate the channel, you will find travel inspiration, hotel reviews from Malaysia, Bali & Lombok and Thailand, beach clean ups on the islands of Koh Lipe, in Thailand and Langkawi, in Malaysia, and even an interview with one of the founders of Tash Hero.

Our journey took a twist in 2020, when we moved to a homestead in Portugal, where we started living an old dream of a sustainable lifestyle, closer to nature.

At the Orange Bloom Homestead & Guesthouse, we started to register our DIY projects, moments of  homesteading life and simple and nutritious recipes created with produce from our garden.

Hello friends, This week we are taking a winter tour around our veggie gardens and then I am going to plant some broad beans and peas to start the process of creating home grown veggie protein! Hello friends, This week we are off to rescue and transplant fruit trees. Here's the story... For a few weeks, every time we left the homestead, we would see a smiling man trimming olive trees in one of the properties on our street. That property had been for sale, at least since we moved to the homestead, and now it looks like we have new neighbours. We wondered if that man was the new owner until, one day, we decided to stop to say hello and introduce ourselves. After a friendly introductory chat, Rui told us that one of our neighbours bought the property to extend his land and is, soon, going to build a new house. Rui's job is to trim the numerous olive trees and remove the fruit trees planted where the new house will emerge. When we found out they were about to cut down fruit trees, probably to burn, we ran to the rescue. It took us two days to remove and transplant the fruit trees. On the first day, we removed an old apple tree and two quince trees. Knowing that I wanted a red plum tree, on the following morning, James went back to remove a poor old plum tree that was trimmed down and left with only a short thick trunk and its roots. It took James all morning to remove the old tree. Now, it sits happily in the small orchard in front of the swimming pool. We also transplanted sixteen small cuttings (some truly small!), also from apple, quince and plum trees hoping they will make it. We hope all of the new inhabitants of the Orange Bloom Homestead will survive and thrive. We will keep you posted! Stay tuned! See you next week! Hi Friends! This week we are excited to show our first made-to-order project! A DIY wood shelf and wood mantlepiece, both made with reclaimed wood. We were pleasantly surprised by this unexpected order from a friend who needed some woodwork done. Knowing about James' passion for wood and his experience after having a building company for almost 30 years, this friend asked if James was up for the challenge. And sure he was! As we have many plans for the property, James is always alert to find opportunities to buy all kinds of wood for our projects. But buying new is not an option! Good quality wood has become scarce and extremely expensive. On the other hand, there is a lot of old wood around from old buildings being demolished or renovated. So this is what we have been doing, buying old used wood for new projects! This situation has opened a new opportunity, so let us know if you need wood pieces like country-style kitchen or garden furniture or other projects in wood. (Keep in mind that we are in Portugal!) Hi Friends! We have finally finished our guesthouse DIY renovation and, just as promised, this is the before-and-after video. Like most construction projects, this one took a little longer than expected. During the renovation, we stopped a few times to put out fires. Between harvesting 300+ kilos of tomatoes, last-minute fig picking, caterpillar invasions, and a few other garden adventures, we finally got to the end of our mission. But in the end, all the efforts and wait were worth it. We are happy with the final result, and at this moment, are preparing to open the doors to guests. Hi Friends! We are so happy to show you our latest project: a DIY wood headboard for the bedroom. To make this DIY wood headboard James used reclaimed wood from a local recycling station. We decided to make a wooden headboard instead of using the fabric headboard that came with the house because it is more hygienic. Not only is it easier to clean, but it is better for any guests who have allergies to dust or pollen. When deciding about details for the guesthouse, we always keep in mind the look and feel, functionality and comfort. Our main aim with this renovation was to create a space where people feel cosy, comfortable and peaceful. This last project wraps up our guesthouse renovation! Hi Friends, the guesthouse renovation is almost done! We have been moving intensely and fast, so our energy levels are getting on the low side. But, as always, we hang in there to get the job done as soon as possible. If you missed the previous guesthouse renovation videos, watch them here: https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLOFHme0vXqd4glVr9GQ2VUd3yuo_ws2wu Here's what you will see in this week's video: - James painted the wood beams on the ceiling of the living area. We contemplated leaving the beams with their natural colour but prefered to paint everything white to give the room a sense of amplitude. - Luciana finished the painting works in the bathroom, including shelves, mirror frame and door frame. - James finished installing the vinyl plank flooring in the bedroom, living and kitchen areas and corridor leading to the bathroom. Initially, James thought of making wood skirtings to go all around the guesthouse, but we decided to maintain the contour of the original skirting. - Luciana painted all the skirtings around the guesthouse with the same Moka colour paint she used for the kitchen furniture, bathroom furniture, and all the internal doors. (Remember, this is a multipurpose paint that does not require preparation, only cleaning the surface before applying.) - Now that all the wooden windows are painted on the inside, it was time to scrape off the paint from the glass, a job that Luciana had fun doing, to the sound of reggae! - Last but certainly not least, we tested the wood stove that James meticulously refurbed and made look like new. This type of project gives us immense pleasure, as we watch, day by day, the fruit of our hard labour take shape and form. The guesthouse renovation is going smoothly, and we are starting to have an idea of how it will look. Last week's video was about the beginnings of the Orange Bloom Homestead guesthouse renovation. This week, things are moving forward fast. Let's take a look at what we've been up to this week. Here's a shortlist of what we have accomplished and will show you in this video. - James made a couple of thresholds for the external doors with reclaimed teak wood. He used a piece of wood that he believes might have been part of old stairs in another house. - Luciana prepared and painted what used to be a brick decorated wall in the kitchen area. We decided to maintain the marks of the old bricks for texture instead of covering them with cement or another material. This way, we gained time and saved money! It did take three coats of paint before we reached the look that we wanted. But in the end, we were extremely pleased with the final result. It looks great! - James took down a small internal wall that was blocking the flow of the room; - Luciana started painting the bathroom furniture with a paint that doesn't require preparation, only cleaning the surface before applying. Another time-saver! We chose the same Moka colour as the kitchen cabinets to keep a consistent and neutral base colour scheme. This way, we have the freedom to play with the decoration. - James raised the bottom of the internal doors and respective frames before putting down the new vinyl flooring. We began by laying out the plastic liner on top of the tiles already on the floor. The plastic will act as a barrier to humidity. - We then started to install the vinyl plank flooring that we bought from a local supplier who sells factory exceeds. The vinyl we chose has a nice thick layer of cork to help insulate from below and make it comfortable to walk on. Well, this pretty much sums it up! Last week, I showed you the beginning of our DIY guesthouse renovation project. This week's video is all about progress! I will bring you in to witness our hard labour of love. This time we will be finishing the "Miami Blue" closet, James will fix some outrageously out-of-square doors, we'll paint part of the kitchen furniture and some walls, and I will discover my new favourite hobby... demolition work! After an 18-month long trip to South East Asia, a move between houses in Portugal, including a total house refurbishment, we ended up becoming homesteaders in the very place where our journey started: Portugal!
