FOCUS ON THE BIGGER PICTURE

You may have noticed, that the usual Monday Food for the Soul post has been missing lately. This is because I have been focusing on the bigger picture.

But this post is not about my bigger picture, it is about some thoughts on different ways to approach it.

First, let’s define the bigger picture as being a breakthrough goal. That one goal that if, or when, we were to achieve, our life would improve dramatically.

As I have mentioned last week, some years back I started the habit of setting goals at the end of each year.

These goals serve as guidelines for various areas of my life, for the following year. However, they are just stepping stones for a “bigger picture”.

As a breakthrough goal is always too big to be handled in one mouthful, it needs to be approached in small bites. These small bites are the yearly goals.

Now, this is my approach and until recently I took it as the ultimate truth of goal setting.

But somewhere along the line, I realized I was wrong, which brings me to share a short episode.

Just get on with it

Considering we are in December, I recently thought to turn a gloomy Sunday into a constructive new-year-goal-setting session with James.

Maybe not the best strategy when you are trying to relax from a tiring and often frustrating week.

The conversation did not go exactly the way I wished as James and I have very different approaches to goal setting and getting things done.

I am a meticulous step-by-step strategizer, who thrills with highlighting accomplished tasks. Once I am firmly set on my goals I go after them “like a pitbull”, as James describes it.

James, on the other hand, has a much more practical and laid back approach. He knows what he wants or needs to accomplish and “Just gets on with it”.

At first, I found this approach vague and disorderly. However, after ten years of observing his modus operandi, I have grown to respect his methods.

And you know why?

Because he gets things done!

He knows where he is going, never doubts himself, and is always, I mean always, in a good mood. (Unless he is complaining about people’s incompetences!) .

As a result, he lives a much more relaxed life, thus the constant good mood!

I often find myself wishing his way will eventually rub off on me!

Conclusion

When it comes to strategies for achieving goals, one size does not fit all. We are all different and consequently get triggered by different stimuli.

Some people need to light their walkway with a torch, others prefer the thrill of the unknown.

However, very importantly, when walking the path accompanied, these differences must be equated if we want to live in harmony.

At the end of the day, whether you are a meticulous goal-setter or a go-with-the-flow planner, the key is to focus on the bigger picture. The rest will follow.
