Earth Day 2020 – Happy day for Planet Earth

Earth Day 2020 is probably the happiest anniversary celebration for Planet Earth, so far. A celebration with an unprecedented reduction on CO2 emissions, almost no cars on the roads, aeroplanes in the air and the global industry on standby. It is unbelievable that oil prices have plunged to historic negative numbers when a little over one month ago we were complaining about the high prices of fuel. There is a lot of discussion going on about the real impact of this temporary CO2 emissions reduction on the planet. Sadly, as explained this morning on CNN, by Denis Hayes, President and CEO of the Bullitt Foundation, radical changes need to be implemented, otherwise, this reduction will only signify a tiny drop in the ocean, with no effective benefits. You can check Denis’s Earth Day – guide to planet repair.
Change needs to start from each one of us, but above all from country leaders. It does make me hopeful to see how nations, companies and individuals are making previously unthinkable changes and adjustments to save lives. Couldn’t we all do the same to save the lives of future generations on our planet? Now more than ever, it is a moment to ponder upon the high cost of the so-called “development” on the environment. Greed is not sustainable. Impactful changes may only be possible through the coordination and cooperation of powerful countries. Nonetheless, a lot can be done on smaller scales, on a national, industrial, community and individual level. The new habits adopted due to the COVID-19 pandemic are showing us how much can be done in an emergency. We can work from home. We can have video conferences, instead of flying or driving somewhere. We can learn online. We can shop online. We can do business online. As modern societies adjust to an online lifestyle, maybe we can even use the time we save from not commuting/travelling in more beneficial ways. Maybe we can spend more time at home with family. Maybe we end up with more time to see or call family and friends that we cannot see in person. Maybe we can start eating better and healthier by cooking at home, buying seasonal products locally and even growing our food. Maybe we can make time to dedicate time to self-development and self-care. There is so much that can be done if only we try. On Earth Day 2020, let’s reflect on how we can change or adapt our daily lives, even more, to contribute to a healthier plant. I leave you with some past eco-friendly / environmental articles and videos to inspire and entertain you. Let me know on the comments below how you are contributing to a healthier planet. May The Bliss be with you.
