3 Powerful “natural remedies”: gratitude, mindfulness and compassion

Natural remedies are always the best option to keep the mind clear, the body healthy and the soul satisfied.

Our society has been induced to look for solutions to our problems outside of ourselves. However, from my experience, we have everything we need to keep mind, body and soul, happy and healthy. It is our choice to do it.

My life changed dramatically for the better when I introduced 3 simple ingredients in my life: gratitude, mindfulness and compassion.

This trio is my magical healing mix every time I lose sight of things.

Natural Remedies

Gratitude

Gratitude is my most precious natural remedy. It is a miracle healer. I repeat this time and time again because gratitude completely changed the way I look at my life and how I respond to it.

Start the day making a list of things you are grateful for.

Keep a gratitude journal for that purpose and add to your list every morning, or as often as possible.

Read your list out loud, to yourself, and hear your gratitude as it sinks into the new day.

Begin with the basic, “I am grateful for being alive”.

Being alive is a gift. It is an opportunity for continuous improvement, no matter what circumstances we are in.

Mindfulness

How many times have you heard “we cannot change the past”, or “you cannot live in the future?

Though we cannot do anything to change the past, we can indeed learn with it. However, it is not wise to dwell on it either, because it only keeps us trapped in a moment that no longer exists.

The future, on the other hand, is only a prediction, a guess and there is no way to know for sure what it will bring.

 So where does life happen?

 Right here, right now.

This is mindfulness, another natural remedy for healthy mind, body and soul.

According to, Jon Kabat-Zinn, creator of the MBSR – Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction programme,

“Mindfulness means paying attention, in a particular way; on purpose, in the present moment non-judgmentally”

Compassion

One of my most precious books is The Art of Happiness by The Dalai Lama and Howard C. Cuttler. In this book, Cuttler quotes The Dalai Lama’s definition of compassion as,

“ Compassion can be roughly defined in terms of a state of mind that is nonviolent, nonharming, and nonaggressive. It is a mental attitude based on the wish for others to be free of their suffering and is associated with a sense of commitment, responsibility, and respect toward the other.”

This combination of caring and altruistic feelings is a healing balm to the soul.

Integrating these three “natural remedies” in our lives is fundamental for healthy and happy living.

The extent of their effectiveness is dependant on how genuine is our intention and practice.

What are your “natural remedies” for keeping a healthy and happy mind, body and soul?
